This pear shaped fruit (or more a vegetable?) is quite misleading when you see it whole. Its toughlooking exterior, quite surprises the beholder, when cut. The inside is a creamy offwhite flesh when ripe, which is smooth in colour and texture like hardened butter. Therefore its nickname butterfruit. A large solid nutlike seed is embedded in the centre, which is inedible.
Many varieties of this fruit, come from different parts of the world, eg. Gautemalan, Mexican, West Indian, etc.
