Question: My periods are very irregular I don't get for 2-3 months continuously; therefore I'm, putting on weight. Please suggest a home remedy.

Ans: Take carrot juice every day for three months. Cinnamon powder along with limejuice taken every day is also found to be very helpful to get regular menstrual cycle. Take fenugreek sprouts 2table spoon with your salad. Sesame seeds are also used as a home remedy for menstrual problem. Have 1 teaspoon of sesame powder twice daily. It will help in menstrual delay and reduces the spasmodic pain during menstruation.

Question: I eat less but still I gain weight. I walk for I-hour daily and still I gain weight suggest me something.

Ans: Eating less mean, are you eating low calorie, low fat foods. If you eat low calorie foodstuffs then only you will lose weight. The aims of a slimming diet are to bring about weight loss by reducing your calorie intake from foods and drinks and increasing your calorie out put with exercise, so that the body uses up more energy than it receive. For example you have to burn 7000 kcal to lose 1 kg of weight. The healthy slimming diet should be based on lower calorie nutritious foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meat, poultry, fish, low fat dairy products, cereals, salads, and pulses.

Question: Does eating sago recipes and sesame seeds or til cause miscarriage

Ans: Sago does not produce miscarriage. But sesame seeds are believed to cause miscarriage. There is no scientific evidence to prove this belief. Consuming large amounts are supposed to cause it.

Question: What is the comparative calorific value of Rice and Sago? Which one contains more calories?

Ans: Sago contains more calories than Rice by weight. 100 gm of rice provides 346kcal of energy where as 100 gm of sago provides 351kcal of energy.

Ans: Soya bean is the most nutritious among the dals. Then comes the moong dal since it contains more protein and minerals. Masoor dal also provides good amount of proteins and minerals.

Ans: Low purine content and moderate fat is recommended for gouts. Food rich in nucleic acids and nucleoprotein e.g. meat, fish, organ meats should be avoided. Liberal amounts of fluid intake are advisable. The gout sufferers can consume restricted quantity of tomatoes.

Question: I am losing weight by eating properly and exercising regularly. But suddenly my hair has started falling at an alarming rate. I am also getting pimples. What should I do? Is this related to doing weights in the gym?

Ans: I do not think there is any connection with weight training and hair loss and pimples. Keep the scalp and face clean always especially after the work out. Drink plenty of water. Increase green leafy vegetables, carrots, whole grain cereals, and fresh fruits in your diet.

Question: I am suffering from gas problem badly. Suddenly I find puffiness of my stomach portion. I wake up at nights due to this gas problem. Please suggest me what should I eat to lessen it.

Ans: Avoid fried and spicy food. Do not go to bed immediately after food. Do some form of exercises daily. At least go for walk. Use of asafoetida and garlic in preparations of food will help to release the gas. Do not skip any meal. Mix 1/4 teaspoon dry ginger powder with a pinch of asafoetida and a pinch of black salt in a little warm water and drink it. This home remedy is good for gas problems.

Question: Can you tell me the nutritional values of Drumstick and Pineapple?

Ans: The pineapple fruit has great nutritive value. It contains carbohydrates, fibre, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc, sodium, sulphur, and water. Pineapples have small amounts of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, B1, and B2. It provides 46kcal of energy, 10.8gm of carbohydrates, 0.5gm of fibre, 9mg of phosphorous, 2.42mg of iron, 39mg of vitamin C, 0.20mg of thiamine, 0.12mg of riboflavin, 34.7mg of sodium, 37mg of potassium for 100gm of the edible portion. They contain bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion. Drumstick provides 26kcal of energy, 3.7gm of carbohydrates, 4.8 gm of fibre, 110mg of phosphorous, 0.18mg of iron, 30mg of calcium, for 100gm of the edible portion.

Question: My 2 year old daughter has very dry skin. Even in peak summer I have to apply a moisturizer all over her body. I tried bathing her with besan but she is allergic to that and gets rash from it. I have started massaging her with milk now days. Will that help? Are there any other remedies?

Ans: Use cream or coconut milk to massage the body and use a very mild soap.

Question: Have just had lump surgically removed from breast. Have been advised to keep away from hormone related food. What food can help me reduce the existing lumps in both my breast?

Ans: Foods such as soybeans and alfalfa sprouts are good sources of Phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens is a substance, which mimic human oestrogen. Oats, corn, barley, brown rice, whole wheat also contain hormone related substances.

Question: I want to lose around 6 to 7 kg. I also want to know how much over weight I am and I am fat only on hips and thighs. My stomach is normal in size. I have another problem. I sweat more only on palms and feet from my childhood. Please suggest any home remedy. It is embarrassing in crowds and makes me feel, conscious. I am a regular exerciser.

Ans: As per your height you are 10 kg more than your ideal weight. At present your body mass index is 25.4 which falls in the over weight category. Reduce your weight training and increase the floor exercises to reduce fat from your hips and thighs. Lying down cycling is good to reduce your thighs and hips. The home remedy for excessive sweating is mix dry sandal wood powder in rose water 1:1 and apply over parts where sweating is excessive.

Question: 1. I want to reduce my weight at least another 15lbs. 2.Also I want to increase my potassium and sodium in diet. Can you give me the list of things, which have these contents.

Ans: Vijaya, for your height 5 feet. 52 kg is absolutely in the normal range. Food sources of potassium are cereals, pulses, dried foods, fruit juices, coconut water, vegetables, apricots, tomato, chickoo, muskmelon, leafy vegetables, celery and potato. Sodium is the commonest alkali and the 6th most abundant element on earth. Dietary source of sodium is the salt added during cooking. Sodium is present mainly in green leafy vegetables and muskmelon.

Question: I go for yoga classes four days a week regularly for one hour since March, 2002 and also was doing the same things taught in the class about abdomen and butt on my own in the morning plus a brisk walk of 20 minutes. Now I have a negative view coming in that I can never loose due to this constipation problem, which has reduced a lot due to yoga but is still there. Also the problem of migraine has reduced but not vanished. Now, as winter's are ahead and I think I will not be able to make for my yoga classes, which I go for in the evening after office and commute by bus, which will be very difficult in winter. I am in a regular stress thinking that I will put on again. Please help and let me know what to do and where to go

Ans: Tanu since now you have reached an ideal weight for you. There is less chance for you to put on weight until you eat plenty of high calorie foodstuffs. Increase whole grain cereals, fruit and vegetable consumption in your diet to get rid of constipation. Drink plenty of water. Honey and limejuice in morning is a good home remedy for constipation. If you are not able to do the exercise in the evening at least brisk walking for 30 - 45 minutes will help to maintain your weight.
