Question: I visited your website and one of the question referred to my problem. I have been suffering from chicken pox marks (black marks) for over 3 years, I know it seems a long time but in those time I have been using doctors medicines but it didn't work as well as I expected it to. You gave one of your patient who was also suffering from chicken pox marks a suggestion (to use ground neem leaves and turmeric). I was wondering if they had these products in Bangkok and if it will work well on the marks? I know this might sound rude but are you sure it going to work? I am ready to try anything, please help me I have it all over my body.

Ans: It is a grandma remedy, which is tried since ages. Herbal remedies are the oldest and the most natural form of therapy. They heal gently with almost no side effects and most of them can be put together with common ingredients found in our kitchen. There is no scientific evidence to support this belief but results are seen in many.

Question: The article on under weight was good but you did not mention premature children. I have had 2 children that have been on increased calorie and fat diets and considered failure to thrive babies- I am always searching for more ideas about how to increase fat and calories while allowing them to stay well hydrated between meals. It is very difficult to increase calories for a 15 month old. Any suggestions would be well received.

Ans: Premature and low birth weight babies usually catch up by one year. They require special nutritional supplement in early life to counter their special requirement and depleted nutritional stores. But when compare to their term with normal birth weight counterparts they remain small in later life. Between 1 to 2 years babies require about 1000 to 1100 Kcal of energy. Increasing frequency of major meals to 5 to 6 times and giving calorie rich diet can achieve this. Give calorie rich food items like butter, ghee, nuts (in paste form), banana etc. Remember your baby will gain only around 2 kilos per year at this age. If your baby is still not gaining weight as required you must consult a pediatrician to rule out any associated medical problem.

Question: Doctor told me the only way for me to get rid of polycystic ovaries disease is to loose weight. In looks I don’t seem as if I am that much weight. I do not have children. I should loose weight to conceive. So I want you to help me with proper diet suggestion so that I can loose weight. How much rice should I take daily. Shall I skip dinner at night and have an apple. Please help me. I want proper diet plan in our south Indian style. I am not used to eating raw vegetables.

Ans: You must never skip any meal to loose weight. Eat low calorie, low fats foods for a healthy weight loss. Instead of cereal bars have proper breakfast like skim milk and oats or idli-sambhar. Rice can be included in one meal. For your calorie requirement you can have 1½ cups of rice in the beginning stage of the diet. Later slowly reduce the quantity. Include plenty of vegetables in the diet. It is not a must to have it raw. You can have cooked low calorie vegetables like green leafy vegetables, ladies finger, snake gourd, bottle gourds, kovai, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot etc. Include fruits like melons, papaya, orange, sweet lime, apple, pineapple in the diet. Drink plenty of water. Along with these diet restrictions you must also follow 40 – 50 minutes of exercises to loose weight.

Food items that are permitted are fish, wheat, rice, bajra, ragi, jowar, oats, maize, whole and sprouted legumes, dhals, all vegetables, low fat milk and its curds, egg white, all fresh fruits preferably low calories fruits like papaya, melons, oranges, sweet lime, apple, pine apple, grapes. Foods like cakes, pastries, naan, roomali roti, fast foods, fried vegetables, potato, banana chips, canned vegetables, cheese, butter, khoa, cream, condensed milk, egg yolk, fried foods, ghee, coconut oil, hydrogenated oils, sweets, chocolates, ice creams, pickles, papads, sauces, salt biscuits, baking powder, fried crispies, all organ meat, red meat, crabs, oyster and prawns should be avoided. Question: My weight is not reducing I have three children I am unable to do exercise as I am tired of my office work and housework. I recently checked my uric acid is very high and my knees are very painful. Can you please help me and I need a proper diet were I can follow and reduce my weight so I can have my pain reduced.

Ans: Exercise is very important to loose weight. Diet alone will take a longer time to loose weight. Since your uric acid level is high you must be suffering from gout. The treatment of gout may be possible by diminishing the synthesis of uric acid in the body or by increasing the excretion. Controlling body weight through a well-planned programme of exercise and diet can also help to relieve gout. Fasting can also precipitate an attack of gout. In traditional medicine cherries, leeks and celery are used to lower blood levels of uric acid. Food rich in nucleic acids and nucleoprotein e.g. meat, fish, organ meats should be avoided. Liberal amounts of fluid intake are advisable. Include more fresh fruits in the diet. Vegetables like peas, beans, spinach, apple, mushrooms and cauliflower should be restricted in the diet.

Question: I am a full time worker and I notice that I have headaches only on Mondays. When I have 1-2 paracetamols, I feel better. But my question is why do I have them every Monday, and can you suggest any ways to overcome this. and is there any dietary regime to follow and also I am suffering from polycystic ovaries.

Ans: Headache can be due to various causes like simple nasal congestion or sinusitis, eyestrain, fatigue or tension to more complicated intra-cranial space occupying lesions. Dehydration is another common cause of headache and this can be over come by drinking plenty of water to replace lost fluids. Consuming excessive amounts of caffeine may also bring on headaches by altering the blood supply to the brain. Food allergies or additives used in certain processed foods can also be the cause of headache. The majority of the headaches in adults are due to stress or worries of the present competitive life. High blood pressure, meningitis, brain tumours etc causes severe persistent headache. Since you are getting headache only on Mondays check out any change in lifestyle or diet on Sunday. Eating a nutritious diet, reducing consumption of alcohol, coffee, tea etc and practising regular exercise in a clean and fresh environment will likely to help to lower the frequency of headaches. Drink plenty of fluids, as dehydration can be a factor, especially for people working in hot, stuffy atmospheres and of course in hangovers. Avoid dramatic changes in diet such as crash dieting which upsets blood sugar levels and can contribute to headaches.

Question: I would like to know whether eating plain boiled karela (only 1 per day) everyday is harmful for my health especially since I am non- diabetic. Moreover I hate sweets so I hardly take any sugar in my diet.

Ans: It is absolutely safe to have karela every day. Karela juice is a popular remedy for diabetes in the Indian sub continent. The benedict test for sugar in the urine becomes negative because karela juice keeps in the reduced state the indicator dye in the glucose oxidize strips and alkaline copper salts. Thus despite high blood sugar urine examination after karela gives a false negative reaction. How ever 50 ml of raw karela juice improves blood glucose tolerance in non-insulin dependent diabetics. The improved glucose tolerance is not associated with raised serum insulin.

Question: I recently came to US with my husband. My husband won't eat his breakfast he takes just coffee and goes to work daily and he will have his lunch at 11am. Is there any problem with his health if he continued like this?

Ans: It is not good to skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most important food of the day if he does not like heavy breakfast he can at least have milk and oats with some fruits. Breakfast is very important since it meet the needs of the nourishment after the 10 –12 hours of gap. You will feel lethargic if you force your body to keep going all morning with out any fuel. When you don't have enough, you will start developing symptoms such as fatigue, loss of concentration, physical and mental exhaustion, and even insomnia. All these symptoms could occur within a matter of hours to as long as a period of several days. The brain needs fuel in the form of carbohydrates to start and run through out the day. Your body is like a machine, so fuel it up in the morning t keep going a healthy way.

Question: I want to know that is my eating habits are healthy. Can lose my weight? I'm pure vegetarian (even No egg). But, I'm craving for sweets, could u please give me advice about my food habits. My plan is to reduce at least 18kgs. Please advice me about my food and exercise habits.

Ans: Your diet is lacking in protein. Include skim milk, skim milk curd and sprouts in your diet. When you feel like eating sweets eat some fresh fruits. Instead of juice have fresh fruits. That will provide you with more vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Brisk walking for ½ an hour every day is good along with ½ an hour abdominal crunches and some exercises for hands and legs which will help to tone up those muscles. You can loose 18 kgs in 4 months time if you follow exercise and diet carefully. Change the diet every 15 days. Read my articles on sample menu for weight loss for more diets plans.

Question: I need to get some idea on calories to eat in order to come down to about 60 kgs. I have never been normal weight. Always 20 lbs above. Need idea of portion sizes, and food groups with Indian foods. I live in US usually the diets here are geared to American foods.

Ans: You can achieve a lower healthier weight by increasing your level of physical activity and reducing your calories intake. You can start with a 1500kcal diet. This can be achieved by combining a low fat diet with some form of regular physical activity. Physical activity since you are working out for 45-60 minutes aerobics and 20 minutes of strength training it is good. You will have to burn 7000 kcal to lose 1 kg of weight. Refer to my article on sample menu for weight loss for the quantity to be taken at each meal. Low calorie healthy diet must provide all the nutrients that the body needs. You must cut down on confectionery cakes, biscuits, sweets and alcoholic drinks that are relatively high in calories, but low in nutrients. The healthy slimming diet should be based on lower calorie nutritious foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meat, poultry, fish, low fat dairy products, cereals, salads, and pulses. Fresh fruit makes a good choice for a low calorie dessert. To reduce fat intake choose lean cuts of meat trim all visible fat before cooking. Poultry should be eaten with out the skin and fish should be steamed, grilled, baked or microwave rather than fried.
