  • Thyroxin is an important hormone which have an effect on all most all organs of the body and is secreted by thyroid glands. When thyroid gland produce in excess or less quantity of thyroxin, it effects in the normal functions of the body. When thyroxin is produced in excess it cause hyperthyroidism and when it is less result in hypothyroidism. Diet in thyroid disorder has only a supplementary role and it can not substitute medication.

    Hyperthyroidism
    The diet for hyperthyroidism is by providing high calories, proteins, vitamins and minerals. The diet should consist of egg, meat, poultry and cereal and pulse combination. Especially minerals and vitamin like A, B complex, C, calcium and phosphorous should be increased to twice the daily requirements. Foods rich in these vitamins and minerals are papaya, mango, fenugreek leaves, milk and milk products, ragi, green leafy vegetables, sprouted Pulses and fish. A person suffering from hyperthyroidism should limit smoking, alcohol, caffeine found in tea, coffee, cola and chocolate.

    Whole wheat bread - 3 slice

    Cheese - 1 cube
    Toast - 3 slice
    Egg omelette
    Butter - 1tsp
    Milk - 1 cup
    Oats - 1 cup
    Mid Morning Chickoo milk shake- 1 glass
    Cookies- 1piece
    Mango milk shake- 1 glass
    Dates
    Lunch Rice -1 1/2 cup
    Chapathi - 3nos
    dhal-1 1/2 cup
    aloo gobi sabji - 1 cup
    Curd - 1cup
    Salad - A good helping
    Wheat roti - 5 slice
    Mutton curry - 3 - 4 pieces
    Methi sabji- 1 cup
    Curd - 1 cup
    Salad - A good helping
    Mid evening Tea/ Coffee - 1 cup (with sugar)
    Almond - hand full
    Tea/ Coffee - 1 cup (with sugar)
    Pistachiochos - hand full
    Dinner Green peas soup - 1 bowl
    Roti - 4
    Sprouts - 1 1/2 cup
    Palak panner - 1 cup
    Sheera - 1 helping
    Salad - A helping
    Chicken soup - 1 bowl
    Rice -1 1/2 cup
    Fish curry
    Dum Aloo - 1 cup
    Caramel custard - 1 helping
    Salad - A helping
    Bed time Milk - 1 cup Milk - 1 cup

    Hypothyroidism
    The diet should be low in calorie, adequate protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins. The Fat allowance should not exceed more than 30gm per day. Salt should be kept at minimum and taken only 1- 2 tsp. per day. Avoid salted confectioneries, chips, and pickles. Remember diet can not substitute for hormone replacement.

    Salad and Fruits
    Salad can include raw cabbage, carrot, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, radish, capsicum, and onion. Among fruits orange, apple, melons, pineapple, papaya, and sweet lime are preferable.

    Rice - 1 cup
    Moong dhal - 1cup
    Bottle gourd sabji - 1 cup
    Curd - 1cup
    Salad - A good helping
    Mid evening Tea with 1/2 tsp. Sugar 1 cup
    Mosambi - 1no
    Tea with 1/2 tsp. Sugar 1 cup
    Pineapple - 1 bowl
    Dinner Chicken clear soup- 1 bowl Brown bread - 2 slice
    Fish baked - 1 piece
    Cauliflower sabji - 1 cup
    Salad - A good helping
    Lentil soup- 1 bowl
    Oats upma with vegetables - 1 1/2 cup
    Sprouts - 1cup
    Salad - A good helping
